At Strange Hill, Mary feels stupid – she only gets As when her friends all get A-triple-pluses. When the charismatic Dennis asks her out she is flattered. But the truth is that he is only going out with her because she is pretty – the brilliant but harsh Claudette is more of a long-term prospect.

Will Dennis learn to love? Will Mary recover from having her heart broken? And will Mary’s father, the headmaster of the school, manage to find love in the shape of the deputy headmistress?
