Free Workshop for Performers from the Global Majority
A free two-day workshop with leading members of Olivier Award-winning Showstopper! The Improvised Musical, the first long-form improvised show to run in London’s West End.
An introduction to how The Showstoppers approach improvising songs together, the workshop will include exercises and scene work that will help you develop skills you already have, and gain the tools you need to improvise scenes, songs and choreography.
Alongside this we will explore key questions: Why do we sing in musicals? What prompts the shift from speech to song? How can we ground these improvised songs in the truth of the characters’ emotions and circumstances?
Why are we doing this?
This workshop has been created to help address the historical lack of representation of performers from the Global Majority in improvisation.
Every actor should have the opportunity to learn how to improvise – it is a fantastic skill which can be applied to writing, devising and performing all kinds of theatre, not just musicals (although that is our specialty).
We recognise that the possibility of being the only person from the global majority in the room might discourage people from participating and that the only way to remove that barrier is to change the landscape. The more backgrounds and experiences we have in the room, the richer the work will be.
Who is it for?
This workshop is particularly intended for those from the Global Majority who have lived experience of racism – for example those of South Asian, East Asian, African, African/Caribbean descent and those from global indigenous communities – who are interested in exploring the world of theatrical improvisation.
Who are your facilitators?
Facilitators to be confirmed soon.
